Embracing National Adoption Month: A Call to Action

Each November, we gather to celebrate National Adoption Month, a time filled with both joy and reflection. Adoption is a beautiful journey, but it also comes with its challenges. This month encourages us to deeply consider the significance of adoption and to raise awareness about the many children waiting for their forever families.

In the U.S., over 343,000 children are part of the foster care system, and about 36,000 of them are legally free and waiting to be adopted. Alarmingly, adoptions from foster care have declined to the lowest level since 2003. Last fiscal year, 15,590 youth aged out of foster care without finding a permanent home. While some adoptions can come with hefty costs, adopting from foster care is often an affordable option, varying by state.

For those unable to adopt, there are many other impactful ways to support this cause. Mentoring aged-out youth, becoming a court-appointed special advocate, or donating essential items and meals to adoptive families are all meaningful ways to contribute. Using positive adoption language and checking in on loved ones connected to adoption—particularly the 5 million adoptees who may face mental health challenges—can make a world of difference. Those with legal questions about adoption are encouraged to seek professional guidance.

National Adoption Month is more than a celebration; it's a call to action. Whether through adoption, volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word, everyone can help. By reaching out to local resources or seeking legal advice, you can make a tangible difference in the life of a child or family. Let’s embrace this month with hope and determination to foster change and nurture lifelong connections.
